Participants in Business Continuity Planning Workshop Encourage Firms on Island To Develop Business Continuity Plans
“Timely and Valuable” were the two adjectives used by participants to describe the “Business Continuity Planning” Workshop hosted by the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture on the 19th and 20th of February at the Kreole Conference Room, Coco Palm Hotel. Many also admitted that the two-day workshop was intense and practical while lauding the Facilitator, Andrew George of NEMO.
The Saint Lucia Development Bank collaborated with the Chamber in support of promoting not only disaster preparedness but business continuity planning and disaster risk reduction. While discussions around disaster preparedness have focused around the annual Hurricane Threat, the workshop stressed that this was only one of the many causes of disasters, which could befall businesses in the region. As such the Business Continuity Plan should consider all natural, manmade as well as biological and cyber threats.
The basic ABC in Business Continuity Planning was echoed by participants in the end who spoke to the need to look at the threats to “Area, Building and Contents”. One participant noted that the broad scope of analysis caused him to “think more critically about the organization’s planning and ways in which it can be further strengthened.”
Participants urged the Chamber to encourage more firms to participate and take advantage of such programs as the information, templates, road maps and expertise shared was invaluable to improving and developing Business Continuity Plans for their Company.
The Chamber pointed out that this workshop was part of an overall program developed to build resilience among members and included the Insurance Symposium held in 2018 and another scheduled for April 2019. The St. Lucia Development Bank also reminded attendees that through the Climate Adaptation Fund Facility their companies can access low cost resources to build resilience and climate smart businesses.
